Resume
Operating
Jeffrey Fiala has run businesses from dollar one to over $200M in annual revenue. He is currently operating UnDesked, formerly known as Transmission, which he co-founded to bring technology to deskless workers. 80% of the global workforce do their jobs without a dedicated computer and the countless resources accessed through it. The frontline workplace of the future will put easily accessible technology in the hands of every worker. Automating and digitizing the key resources and workflows necessary for both administration and self-service, UnDesked combines digital signage, touchscreen kiosks, QR codes, desktop computers, and mobile devices to communicate via text messaging, email, Microsoft Teams, and Slack. Businesses can do away with countless single-point solutions, digitize long-running analog activities, and provide powerful technology to every workplace user.
Prior to that, he was a senior executive at publicly-traded Weedmaps (NSDQ: MAPS), the world’s first cannabis marketplace for consumers. He led and grew the commercial business across the entire B2B product suite to over $200M annually, from marketplace listings and platform ads to a suite of SaaS (software as a service) products that power delivery logistics, in-store experiences, eCommerce and CRM (customer relationship management) to off-platform ad solutions leveraging programmatic, digital and OOH (out of home) ads.
Previously, he founded Proof, an incubator of products focused on innovating how people access career opportunities by creating new pathways to build digital portfolios and actionable professional networks. Several products were successfully launched, including:
• Crowdsource platform enabling businesses to purchase freelance social media campaign strategy, design and execution while creating income and digital portfolios for candidates focused on a career in social media.
• SaaS data product that monitors and helps manage professional community engagement via digital communication channels (Slack, email, Zoom, etc).
• Marketplace for operators of digital communities with industry-focused and/or functional area-focused professionals to attract sponsorship from B2B enterprise software and professional services companies.
His work in operational roles began at Voray, a B2B community-building marketplace helping professional services and enterprise technology companies build relationships with senior executives at start-ups, SMBs, and enterprise companies using a mix of in-person live events, digital events, and a digital communications platform. Jeff joined as the first finance hire to support the fundraise of their Series A venture round. He quickly rose through the organization. Over 18 months, he was promoted to SVP Operations, Chief Operating Officer, and finally Chief Executive Officer. His work on time-driven activity-based costing was the subject of a Harvard Business School case study. Voray is still successfully operating a variety of professional communities through digital and in-person events in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago.
Investing
Jeffrey Fiala spent more than a decade trading equity in the public markets. He was an active and large shareholder and high-volume trader in IPOs for Facebook, Netflix, Visa, Alibaba, General Motors and many other of the biggest public offerings of all-time. During the US credit downgrade of 2011, he was responsible for over 1% of the daily trading volume of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NSDQ: SPY), transacting more than 4 million shares per day. His team delivered outsized returns in high-volatility environments including the sub-prime housing crisis and housing bubble, the global banking system crisis, stock market crash and bailout, the Japanese tsunami and nuclear scare, the Eurozone debt crisis and US credit downgrade, China’s economic emergence and countless other global market events.
Consulting
With a wealth of experience in analyzing and investing in publicly-traded companies, Jeff used his acumen for the numbers that drive corporate success to help earlier-stage build better foundations from which to scale. He partnered with CEOs and founders as a consultant and advisor. With a focus on fundamentals, he helped distill and address the core drivers of good strategic decision making, strong operational structures, and scalable ventures. Jeff specialized in strategies around cost controls and revenue growth, process building and refinement, project and team management. He has helped start-ups in technology, eCommerce, food & beverage, consumer packaged goods, real estate and professional services. They’ve found product-market fit. They’ve raised and deployed capital, launched new products, opened new markets, landed enterprise accounts, and scaled operations.
Personal
Jeff loves helping entrepreneurs working on interesting and complex problems. He finds the work in the startup space to be especially compelling, fulfulling and exciting. He plans to continue to launch his own ventures, consult, advise or invest in others, and support what he believes to be an important source of creativity and innovation in the professional landscape.
Fiala lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Daniella, an incredibly successful entrepreneur and co-founder of Baublebar, their two sons, and their dog Mario.
